Hike for Humanity - GR20 Corsica · 28 June 2016
Hi! My name is Ed, and I am a first year medical student at the University of Edinburgh. In a team of 6, during the first part of July this summer I will be trekking over the mountains of Corsica, following the GR20 route. This is known as the toughest long distance trail in Europe, and we are doing this strenuous and gruelling challenge to raise money for a great charity, Médecins San Frontières. I have described the unbelievable work they do below. We will also be doing other fundraising activities in Edinburgh to help reach our target of £1500 as a team. Hopefully, we will push right past that target and we will continue to work as hard possible to raise money for this charity which helps millions and millions of people worldwide. Personally, this trek will be hugely challenging due to a recent knee injury and then operation which has meant I haven't been able to walk without crutches for almost 3 months.
According to the World Health Organisation, 2 million people in Libya alone are in need of urgent healthcare due to the current conflict. However, it is not just Libya where people are dying because they can't access even basic healthcare services - conflict in the middle East, natural disasters such as earthquakes in Nepal, and epidemics like the Zika virus in Brazil, have led to millions and millions of people being denied a fundamental human right. Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) was set up in 1971 with the aim of providing emergency medical care to the people who need it most. This charity works in an incredible 67 countries, saving millions of lives of people struck by disaster. As well as emergency crises, MSF have long-running health education projects, and research into new medicines which could make all the difference in the fight against the biggest killers in the world, such as TB and Malaria.
I would be very grateful for any donations, big or small, which will ALL go directly to MSF, and help save lives in medical crises all over the world. The tiniest of donations can lead to huge difference in these peoples' lives.
