Malaria Consortium's seasonal malaria chemoprevention program provides preventive, anti-malarial medication to young children during periods of high malaria transmission, reducing their likelihood of dying from malaria.

There are several ways in which saving lives from malaria will help save lives from COVID-19.

First, if people are ill with malaria, their immune system is weakened such that they are more vulnerable to COVID-19. This is consistent with people that are dying who tend to have ‘underlying health issues’.

Second, increased malaria leads to a greater strain on already fragile health systems including taking up more intensive care beds, equipment and healthcare staff that is desperately needed for COVID-19 patients.

Third, malaria symptoms are very similar to those of COVID-19 (high fever). There is a greater risk of misdiagnosis, which makes the management of COVID-19 more challenging.
