IMPORTANT UPDATEUnfortunately on Monday 1 March I fell of my bike on some ice, and broke my right hip. I now have 3 pins holding the bones together, and an initial 6 weeks on crutches with the leg non load-bearing.The healing process will then be reviewed. Given timescales for being on crutches it is currently looking most unlikely that I will be fit enough to complete this event this year..........
Best wishes
DavidThanks for visiting my JustGiving page:
Cancer is the one disease that we almost all come into contact with,
whether through a family member, a friend or just an acquaintance. Having lost
my father-in-law some years ago, and having an Aunt currently undergoing
treatment made me feel I needed to do something to help. Notes from friends in
cards this Christmas brought news of two more people having treatment over the
last year, and a work colleague told how her friend’s daughter had just been
diagnosed with a potentially terminal form of the disease. This latest
news finally spurred me into action, and I have signed up to take part in the
Macmillan Cancer Support London to Paris cycle challenge in July. This is one
of Macmillan’s major fund raising events and they are hoping that 300 plus
cyclists will take part.
Vital breakthroughs in the developments of drugs, treatments and
operations mean that more people than ever can now look forward to life after
cancer. Many individuals and families need help and support throughout the
disease which is where Macmillan Cancer Support comes in. One very important
aspect of Macmillan’s work is the enabling of timely treatment by providing
financial support to individuals and their dependants, in situations where
without assistance they would be unable to afford time off work.
Macmillan is one of three charities that
our Churchis supporting, with fund raising helping support one of the local team of nurses. All the funds that I raise from this challenge will go
to Macmillan’s central fund and can help provide any of their services wherever
the need is greatest.
The challenge takes place in July, over a route of about 470km starting
in central London and ending in central Paris. For those who understand miles
better than kilometres it equates to something like 95 miles between London and
Dover on the first day, the routes on the following two days cover about 85
miles each, and to finish, 50 miles or so into Paris on Saturday 10 July. I
have already started training by increasing the miles covered on the bike as
the weather allows, and look forward to better weather as spring arrives.
Macmillan
really need our help to carry on their essential work and I hope you feel able
to support my efforts by sponsoring me.
