My entire career as a Scientist working in Biomedical Engineering "has both breadth and depth including:- determining current levels required to produce ventricular fibrillation (to set equipment safety standards); electrical isolation of patient-monitoring systems; introducing alternatives to
radiotelemetry (notably infrared) for monitoring and locating hospital
patients; determining sound levels experienced by foetal lambs; telemetric monitoring of physiological responses and environmental conditions of working deep-sea divers; foetal EEG during the early stages of labour; intra-arterial and other measures on critically ill patients during transportation; monitoring EEG in
bedridden patients in their own homes.
Working alongside clinicians and their patients, I focused on exploiting the benefits of technology in advancing areas of clinical research where objective methodology for gathering hard data has not gained hold and anecdotal methods prevail. Monitoring the cardinal signs of parkinsonism is a case in point. Methods that are particularly apposite for these patients for measuring gait, rigidity and recumbent axial rotation, are now in used routinely in our research. In so many areas of medicine, precise objective measures have led to significant advances, and it is this aspect of the work that motivates and inspires me."
