Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
At the start of December I am joining a trip to visit Spurgeons Academy, a primary school in Kibera on the outskirts of Nairobi. Kibera is one of the biggest slums in the world. The trip is being organised by Global Care, the charity which supports the school and of which I am a Trustee. We are going to provide the school and its associated community with a celebration to mark 20 years since its foundation and to provide some holiday club activities for the pupils at the start of their Christmas holidays.
I am funding the trip myself in order that any support I can muster will all be directed to the Academy.
Spurgeons Academy
At the edge of Kibera, right next to the railway line which marks the outer boundary of the slum, lies Spurgeons Academy. It is a primary school for the poorest and most vulnerable of Kibera’s citizens – children who struggle with additional needs in a deprived community. This includes orphans, children living with a single parent or elderly grandparent and those affected by illnesses such as HIV/AIDS.
It’s much more than just a school. As well as education, the children receive two meals a day, loving care, medical support, and some even find a home, as those who really don’t have any extended family to care for them are fostered by families from the church connected to the school.
