Story
Over the next 12 months I am going to be taking on a challenge which I simply never previously thought possible and the reasons for this are 2 fold:
a) to push myself harder than ever before and take on challenges that I once thought impossible
b) to support a most worthy cause – this by far is the most important reason
So what is this challenge I hear you ask? Well, in May 2013 I will be trekking through the foothills of the Himalayas in India Dharamsala. All in all I will trek around 67km/41miles.
This is all in aide of Marie Curie Hospice Hampstead (Marie Curie Cancer Care). My link to Marie Curie Hospice Hampstead dates back to 1998 when my grandfather was a patient at the hospice and received the most amazing care which continued upon his discharge home to die when the Marie Curie Nursing Service stepped in. This was the exact time that I knew that I wanted to work in the hospice and to specialise in Palliative Care. Since completing my nurse training I have worked for Marie Curie Cancer Care both at the hospice and within the nursing service (community) and can honestly say that I both love and support the values and ethos of the charity and this is exactly why I am asking you to support me in these challenges.
I have been a nurse at the hospice for almost 7 years and currently work as a Ward Manager. Day in and day out I see the difference that every £1 donated makes to the lives of countless patients and their families and carers. We support people to live until they die and beyond this we support the family and carers of patients. The difference that is made to the lives of so many people is immeasurable and heartwarming but it does not come cheap. Care is totally free to patients and their familys but it costs over £5.3 million to run the hospice each year. Last year the dedicated team cared for more than 1,000 patients within the Day Therapy Unit and in-patient wards and we need your help to continue to provide this truly amazing and much relied upon service.
So I ask you to sponsor me to undertake these challenges and in your own way make a difference to those who need us. It costs £235 for a one day attendance at the Day Therapy Unit and £515 to care for a patient on the in-patient unit for one day so you can see, every £1 sponsored will be greatly appreciated by myself and put to very good use.
