Story
I'm asking people to please give what they think they would like to. I have no 'target'.
I am fund raising for Essex Air Ambulance and Breast Cancer Now. Please choose which you would like to support by going to the correct page. On Saturday 14th November I wished somebody well on their trip to the South Pole and the reply came back - Would I like to join them as somebody had dropped out at the last minute?!
Having asked Annette first, I decided to join the group on Monday - having had little thought about my lack of personal fitness.....
I have some how managed to get everything ready, in four days we booked the flights, got permission to go to Antartica, been told 'I'm fit to travel' by the GP, got the clothes and boots together and basically packed up work until January! I'm very grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this happen at such short notice.
I flew out on Wednesday (25th), with 14 others (who have been training for two years), to Punta Arenas in southern Chile. Unfortunately (today - 3rd December) we are still here due to the terrible weather conditions currently in Antarctica. We are currently now due to fly tomorrow onto Union Glacier, Antarctica for training before being dropped off and trekking the last 100 nautical miles to the South Pole. The trek will involve me pulling all my own supplies, erecting tents and cooking in temperatures of between -28C and -40C, at an altitude of 3,000m, for up to three weeks.
I will not be able to update this page again once we fly out of Chile as there is no 'communication' in Antarctica. However, you can follow how we are getting on at http://endurance100.org/ there is a blog and link to the satellite positioning device we will be carrying with us
Update: We did not all return by Christmas. We were home on the 28th for a late Christmas but look forward to spending New Year with family and friends.
