Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I run for fun and fitness.
In October 2013 I ran a relay leg in the Jersey Marathon, two days later running to work I suffered a heart attack. Unfortunately my family has a history of heart disease, I lost a father and brother to heart attacks both at the age of 54. I was 57 when my heart attack occurred despite being on statins, eating sensibly and keeping fit.
For years I had mistaken chest pain for breathlessness when running. Surprisingly, this is an easy mistake to make. I sadly read that Robert Berry a runner in the London Marathon this year might have made a similar mistake, he was not as lucky as me and died. You can read his story here http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-19607990.
My heart attack was not severe, in fact if it had not been for my family history I might have simply ignored it and put it down to an off day! My treatment by the NHS was excellent. I have had a single stent implanted which has made a big difference to the way I feel when running. Lots of friends have expressed concern about me continuing to run but I now know what the danger signs are and my running times have been improving.
I am currently following a VDOT training regime for 5k, really enjoying it and will be vey interested to see what my 5k time is like at the end of it. I use Map my Walk to track my training - its a brilliant free app.
