In January 2015 I will be travelling to Cambodia as a volunteer with the UK charity Project Trust.

Project Trust is a registered charity which sends around 200 young volunteers abroad to 25 countries annually. It is widely respected as one of the most experienced and professional voluntary organisations in the UK. A unique feature of the charity is that they only send volunteers abroad for long term placements of either 12 or 8 months as they believe that this allows them to really integrate into the local community and immerse fully into the culture in order to make a meaningful contribution.

After a competitive and challenging 4 day selection course on the Isle of Coll I was selected by the charity to spend 8 months teaching English in a local Primary School as well as caring for orphaned children in Cambodia.

Cambodia is a unique country that has recovered from a tumultuous period of civil war and is now demonstrating more stable growth. However, it ranks as one of the worlds poorest countries and many places are still in need of help.

I am excited about this opportunity and believe that I can make a positive contribution to improve the lives of the young people I will be working with in Cambodia.  I plan to get involved in setting up extra curricular clubs and really getting involved with the pupils and the school in as many ways as I can.

I have many fundraising activities planned including a Bonus Ball lottery, a sponsored walk and some Cambodian themed dinner parties.  I am also approaching a number of charitable trusts.  With these events and with the support of family anf frineds I hope to be able to reach my fundraising target of £4,800.  This money will go direct to the charity to cover the cost of travel and living expenses as well as operating costs and support while in Cambodia.
