Story

Instead of gifts we would be very grateful for donations to the The SEED Project, which was founded by Jonathan's sister Marie.

All monies raised on this page will go towards SEED's Trees For Life campaign - we'd love to plant as many trees as possible in honour of baby David Douglas!

TREES FOR LIFE

Central to SEED's model of holistic sustainable development is community tree planting. Structured around communal woodlots within vulnerable communities, these provide a sustainable source of fruit and seed, fuel for cooking and heating, shade for animals, as well as building materials, wells, fences, agricultural tools and even furniture. As well as providing food and other benefits, local families learn tree planting techniques and appreciation of forest conservation grows. Other environmental benefits include reduced soil erosion, habitat restoration and carbon sequestration.

SEED started the Trees for Life campaign in 2010, since then we have planted woodlots in Rusike, Mwanza, Dudzu and Murehwa, a total of over 10,000 trees. We plant a mix of species including gum trees, indigenous species and fruit trees. In each case, our community partners provide the land, labour and manure. SEED supplies the trees, fencing and an environmental specialist to provide training.

We plant gum trees because they grow fast and (crucially) because you can cut off a branch and the tree will continue to grow. The whole community take turns to look after them - including preparing the ground and putting up protective fences - and the benefits are shared by everyone.

These donation amounts indicate the numbers of trees to be planted and include the cost of training and fencing:

3 trees £15

10 trees £50

100 trees £500

Whatever sum you give you can be assured that you are helping SEED to plant the roots of resilience.
