Meet our son Cash! Cash is 9 and suffers with a complex form of focal epilepsy that’s proving drug resistant. He was finally diagnosed in the summer 2019 after what felt like an eternity of “funny turns” as we used to call them back then. As a family Cash’s epilepsy diagnosis hit us hard, it was unexpected and like most we had never heard of any other types of epilepsy or the 40 other types of seizures other than tonic clonics. So you can imagine our surprise. What’s followed has been a journey and a half for Cash and still 3 years later Cash is having weekly/daily seizures and this is how we were put in touch with THE DAISY GARLAND. We’ve exhausted 5 medications (cash is currently still on 3) with no success gaining seizure control, so our next option is to try a medical ketogenic diet to try and gain some seizure control. Cash’s dietician kindly put us in contact with the daisy garland and instantly we were blown away by the phenomenal amount of love and support they offered not only Cash but the other 18,000 children with drug resistant epilepsy in the UK.
Last year our little man despite facing horrendous medication side effects, alongside trying to manage home school and navigate a time that baffled the world Cash decided he wanted to make a difference. He wanted to teach his friends and family about epilepsy. He wanted to raise money for an epilepsy charity and he wanted to feel “normal.” It was insane the success he achieved. He raised £3,000 and so much crucial awareness and for the first time was able to confide in his friends about his diagnosis. Which as his family made us beam with pride.
So here we are again…. He’s on a mission for the second and final year to raise awareness and some much needed funds for the charity that had made this unknown journey feel exciting. Behind the scenes Cash and his sister Darla plan all of this. It might take a whole pack of printer paper but I’m sure your agree they do an amazing job for 9 and 7! Their kindness and compassion is second to none and they stay invested right till the very end.
The Daisy Garland is a charity working exclusively with children and families who’s lives have been touched by drug resistant epilepsy. Set up in 2004 in memory of their daughter Daisy who sadly passed away from ( SUDEP - sudden expected death in epilepsy.)
The charity fund an increasing number of ketogenic dietitians/dietetic support workers all of them working in NHS hospitals treating thousands of children who suffer from drug-resistant epilepsy with the ketogenic diet. The Daisy Garland are the only charity in the UK offering wrap around ketogenic support as well as funding full-time ketogenic dieticians working in NHS hospitals offering a free ketogenic service nationwide. Each full-time dietitian costs c£48,000 pa. They also fund small one off grants for special needs equipment for families in need, like sleep monitors to keep children with epilepsy safe and to aid in the fight against SUDEP.
I’m sure your agree they do an absolute valuable job for children like Cash and you can see why he’s picked them this year to pay make the kindness they have shown him.
