Story

Hi,

My name is Carolyn Osborn and I am a freelance Fitness Consultant specialising in exercises for the elderly. My job takes me to a number of residential and nursing homes in Yeovil, Sherborne and the surrounding areas where I have made many good friendships with residents. Of course because the residents are elderly and, quite often, frail the friendships frequently tend to be quite short and I am always saddened when one of my friends passes. In the past I have occasionally worked at St Margaret's Somerset Hospice teaching exercise sessions for the children of hospice patients and know from first hand experience what a caring and happy environment is created there.

My main passion in life is swimming - I swim EVERY day at least once, often twice, and my daily target is 200 lengths of the Nuffield Health Centre's pool in Yeovil. The idea came to me that I might put my swimming to good use by attemping a marathon swim in aid of St Margaret's Somerset Hospice in Yeovil. I thought about swimming the English Channel but, to be honest, I hate swimming in open water. So, the next best thing? - swim the distance of the English Channel in Yeovil - brilliant!

Well, brilliant until I gave it a bit more thought and realised what was involved!!! The English Channel is approximately -21 miles (36,960 yards) or 35 kilometres (33.796 mtrs). Nuffield Health Centre's pool in Yeovil is 20 metres which means that I will have to swim 1,690 lengths!!!!
