I thought I would never play again. But since my last operation in November 2014  I hope that I will be well enough to resume playing with the Band, following a unique operation performed by surgeons at the Royal Marsden, Chelsea.

Founder of the internationally acclaimed Hanover Band and examiner for Trinity College London, Caroline was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer back in 2012 evidenced by a Krukenberg tumour which usually affects the ovaries, but in Caroline’s case the cancer had spread to her bowel and appendix.

 In July 2012, Caroline went through three invasive operations at her local hospital in Brighton where due to complications she was left in crippling pain and told she would not live beyond three days. During this third operation she was fitted with an external stoma, which during the next eighteen months of recovery meant she was not able to play the instrument she so dearly loved.

 In January 2013, Caroline was referred to the Royal Marsden under the care of Professor David Cunningham. During her time at the Royal Marsden Caroline developed a hernia which was causing her pain and discomfort. Leading surgeons Mr Paul Harris and Mr Satvinder Mudan performed the surgery on Caroline, repairing the hernia and reversing the stoma in an eight hour operation.  Caroline is rapidly recovering from her ordeal and is confident that she will be able to play her cello by the end of the year after a lot or rest and recuperation.

 Caroline said: “Although I am still undergoing treatment for cancer, I am so pleased to feel well enough, for the first time in a long while, to carry on living a normal life. I’m really looking forward to picking up the cello again and have organised a concert on Tuesday 31 March 2015 at St.Andrew Holborn, City of London with The Hanover Band to raise funds for the ground-breaking work that takes place at the Royal Marsden”.
