The University of Warwick Wind Orchestra is running a charity playathon, playing for 12 hours on Monday 27th February 2023 from 9:00-21:00. We will be doing this for a great charity, Safeline, with some more information about them below:
Safeline is an independent charity that helps prevent sexual violence and provides free, specialist, long-term support, for anyone affected. Safeline is inclusive - supporting people regardless of age, (3+ years) gender/sexual orientation/race/physical/mental ability/religion/political views. Former service users are employed throughout the organisation including at Board Level, ensuring the needs of users are at the heart of everything we do.
1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men have been affected by sexual violence. It is believed that 1 in 10 children or approximately 3 children in every classroom have been impacted by sexual violence. Safeline supports survivors with a wide range of trauma-informed, person-centred services which are long-term, integrated, tailored and free:
- Specialist face-to-face/Telephone/online counselling/psychotherapy/group work and creative therapies.
- Prevention and Early intervention support
- Independent Sexual Violence Advocates who provide independent, specialist practical/emotional support to survivors.
- A national Helpline & Online Support service for men and boys that provides immediate emotional support/information/advice.
- A Warwickshire helpline for adults and children
- Specialist training services for professionals/teachers/public officials.
COVID had a devastating impact on young people and it has led to an exponential increase in the number of children who have experienced Child Sexual Abuse or are more vulnerable to it. Safeline is now receiving more referrals from people aged under 17 than adults to our face-to-face services in Warwickshire and Coventry. Their most recent figures for last year show:
- 62% of all new referrals to our Face-to-Face counselling service were from children and young people aged 17 and under
- Referrals to our Prevention and Early Intervention services have increased by 127%
- 46% of all new referrals to our ISVA (Independent Sexual Violence Advocates) service were from Children and Young People aged 17 and under.
- 62.5% of these were aged between 13-17 years, 37.5% aged 12 and under.
- 56% of all crimes committed against Children and Young People involved Child Sexual Abuse, 38% rape and 6% sexual assault.
- 81% of all the sexual violence crimes committed against Children and Young People happened recently, 19% were historic abuse.
