We tackle poverty by supporting girls to learn, thrive, and lead change

Story

CAMFED Ghana currently has a cohort of women who are halfway through two year courses and who need support to complete these courses as previously agreed funding has fallen through. These women are studying a range of courses, from Information Technology and Hotel Management to Tourism Management. Completing their training will allow them to secure their own financial independence and have the ability to re-invest in their communities. Your donations will provide this group of women with finance to complete their courses and help them
to cover the cost of course books, laptops, accommodation and course fees.

Government initiatives in Ghana are aiming to get more women into the workforce, both in traditionally women-dominated sectors, such as midwifery and nursing, but also in more traditionally male-dominated sectors, such as construction, power and energy, agro-processing and metalwork. CAMFED Ghana has a track record of successfully supporting women from disadvantaged rural backgrounds through tertiary education. These young women then serve as vital role models to girls in their communities and as leaders in the workforce. Their progress into the workplace is proof of the doors education can open and this helps those coming behind them to stay in school and aim high. By bringing much-needed skills and resources back to their communities, young women gain status and stature as well as economic independence, widening their life choices, and the prospects for their families.

This includes women like Fatima, the thirteenth child in a family of fourteen who used to walk three hours to school every day, and work at her local market in the evenings. After applying for nursing school, Fatima’s hopes were crushed when she realised she did not have sufficient money to pay the fees for her course. With support from CAMFED, Fatima was able to complete her training course, and today she is a professional nurse in Ghana. Fatima joined the CAMFED Association as an education ambassador and health advocate, speaking on issues including maternal mortality, HIV/AIDS and domestic violence.

Like Fatima, there are many women hoping to complete their tertiary education, who lack the funding to do so. We need your help to ensure that these women have the resources they need to complete their courses and secure their financial independence.
