Story
It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that Mark passed away, peacefully at home, on October 9th.
Those of you who have been with us for many years will remember Mark for his buoyant personality, dapper dress and array of hats, not to mention his unique humour!
Mark and I bought Dene’s Deli in 1992. His determination, hard work and banter behind the counter played an enormous part in establishing the reputation of the deli. ‘The Butty Baron’ was brimming with enthusiasm and constantly coming up with new quirky ideas. He even created our own newspaper named ‘The Deli Star’ and famously constructed a Millennium Bridge sandwich!
In 2001 Mark took a back seat to be a stay-at-home dad but reappeared for the odd shift throughout the subsequent years.
Sadly, personal troubles led to Mark’s move back to Cumbria in 2011 where he built a new life for himself, initially in his home town of Barrow in Furness, and then spent the last 6 years in Kendal.
In Mark’s memory we have launched a sandwich, 100% of each sale (£5.50) will go to MIND-In-Furness. Mark had a firm favourite and it had to be made in a particular way -
Pastrami, Emmental, Coleslaw, Mustard, the essential salt and pepper….& always cut in half!
We have fittingly named this tribute and fundraiser ‘The Butty Baron’.
We have created this page for those who have expressed their wish to donate in Mark's memory, but don't live close enough to pop in for a sandwich.
Thank you for all your support. Rest in peace Mark
