Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

St Michael's Church has been at the centre of the community of Brereton, since it was built in 1834 when it was funded by generous donations from the local community. It has seen some changes in its 189 year history to make it into the church that we know and love today.

It is one of few remaining churches which have sgraffito created by the son of Mary Sumner, who founded the Mother's Union.
Sgraffito is a process where different colours of plaster are applied and, while wet, the layers are scraped back to form the desired image. In the case of our church, they form several angels around the upper wall of the area around the altar and choir stalls.

There is also a map of Southern Africa with hand written notes by David Livingstone, from when he came to St Michael's Church School and gave a talk about his exploits.

Today the Church is in need of urgent repair work to preserve the history that is within it and enable it to continue to offer itself to the community for a further 200 years and more.

  • The church needs to be made water tight before much more water seeps through the stonework and affects the sgraffito work.

The total for this work is £42,000 and we need your help in securing the funding for this. Some funding is available, but it is matched funding. Thgis means that if a funder offered us £2000, we would have to match that with £2000 that we have found from the community. Please help us to secure this funding.

As well as Sunday services, baptism, wedding and funeral services, we are active in the community with the Bretreton Carnival, place of welcome, monthly lunch bunch, as well as many regular community events.

JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
