On Saturday June 6th this year 2 professional Yachtsman (John Bidwell my co skipper and owner of Yacht swift, and myself Barry Brixey) will undertake the biggest sailing challenge of their careers on board the 40' "yacht Swift". Along with 99 other yachts, we will set sail from Falmouth UK on leg 1 of the Azores and Back Ocean Yacht race to Porta Delgada on the Azores Island of Sao Miguel, in mid Atlantic. A distance of some 1250 nautical miles, and then after a short rest Leg 2 back to Falmouth a total distance of 2500 nautical miles.
So why do such a thing!! … I hear you say, but this is not about the personal challenge, it is about two people who were a very big part of our lives, but who lost theirs and their brave fight to cancer related conditions. Johns Brother Peter, who had cancer of the kidney and my dear wife Frances, who lost her brave fight for life to breast cancer three years ago. Since her sad death in Nov 2011, I have been thinking how I could do something a little out of the ordinary to raise money for a charity who work relentlessly to find a possible cure and to give those people with terminal conditions a quality of life with there loved ones, Cancer Research. So when John asked me would I be co skipper on the AZAB it took a nano second to respond!! I do this in fond memory of Frances the most beautiful person I have ever known, and I had the privilege of being married to her for 33 and a half years, but miss her terribly, as I know John misses his dear brother Peter. We hope you guys can help us reach our target for Cancer Research, which is half of the overall total of £5000 the other charity I'm raising money for is the Lullaby Trust in memory of our Grandson Joe please see Barrys AZAB page if you can make a donation
We both thank you, and hope we can reach our target with your help, so lets make a positive out of tragedy, get behind the challenge, and make a a difference to someones life and a donation, no matter how little every penny counts!!!!
Kind Regards and thank you
Barry Brixey & John Bidwell
