Story
The Critically Endangered Baer's Pochard is one of the world's most threatened birds and its population appears to be in freefall. Earlier this year, surveys on its known wintering grounds located just 45 individuals despite several hundred having been present at some sites in previous years. In the last few weeks only a handful of pairs have been found at its usual breeding sites.
Baer's Pochard breeds in south-east Russia and north-east China and its wintering range includes north-east India, south-east Asia and southern China. Identifying the causes of its decline across such an extensive range is exceptionally challenging and urgent internationally coordinated action is needed to improve understanding of its plight and to implement the top priority conservation measures.
The Partnership for the East Asia-Australasian Flyway (EAAFP) is now working closely with WWT, BirdLife International and several national conservation organisations and governments to develop a robust Species Action Plan that will identify the emergency actions that must be taken to save Baer's Pochard from extinction.
Our experience shows that even in the most severe cases, where there's a will there's a way and, with the right resources, integrated conservation measures can save species like Baer's Pochard.
Individuals like you can make an enormous personal difference by helping to fund the required action. So please help us save Baer's Pochard now, before it is too late.
