Story
We are 4 students at Birmingham City University fundraising for It's a Penalty as part of their Student Ambassador Programme.
It is estimated that 40.3 million people globally are enslaved today. Modern slavery is a global issue, but also a problem in the UK. A report published by The Centre for Social Justice entitled 'It Still Happens Here: Fighting UK Slavery in the 2020s' used 2017 police data to estimate 4197 potential survivors of modern slavery in the West Midlands alone.
It's a Penalty is a charity that raises awareness, advocates and works collaboratively to end modern slavery, exploitation and abuse. Modern slavery (in the UK, this term encompasses both slavery and human trafficking) presents a significant public health concern and disproportionately affects vulnerable individuals, such as young people, migrants and those living in poverty. Survivors have often experienced extreme violence and psychological abuse.
As part of the IAPs Student Ambassador Network Programme, we consulted with a group of modern slavery survivors being supported by the Adavu Project in Birmingham. They are receiving emotional and practical support, such as: helping secure jobs, training or education, helping them access healthcare and legal representation and finding appropriate accommodation with the Adavu Project. However, they do not have access to well-being development opportunities.
The survivors all said they would like to be able to have yoga sessions to help them with their well-being.
Our aim is to be able to provide these sessions once a month for an initial six month period.
Please support us and donate to the cause!
Thank you,
