Story
I am running the Leicester 10K on 3rd September in support of Anti Slavery International.
Why?
I work in IT and I am starting to look like your stereotypical 30s IT consultant - rotund around the midsection, gorging on snacks, working long hours at a desk and being generally unfit.
I wanted to find a way to get fit and make a difference. Whilst on a lunch break, I came across a billboard advertising the 10K race in Leicester and thought it would be a great way to kill two birds with one stone.
Why Anti-Slavery International?
Anti-Slavery International looks to aid those marginalised in society, those who's stories are rarely publicised or crimes that are rarely given air time. Modern slavery is big as it has ever been and did not end with abolition in the 19th century. There are over 21 million people enslaved in various forms including forced labour, debt bondage, human trafficking, descent-base slavery, child slavery and forced marriage.
Anti-slavery International operates at both a structural level and grassroots level to make a difference. Activities include raising awareness, education, policy change, victim protection, help people escape slavery and help them rebuild their lives including shelter, financial support and long term vocational training.
Where does the money go?
If you are like me, you would want to know how is your money spent. So here is the breakdown, for each £1
88p goes directly into projects and campaigns. 10p goes into events and fundraising. 2p goes into admin.
