Story
In June, I will be attempting to cycle 600 miles in 8 days. This is a huge personal challenge – and six times the distance I've ever tried cycling before!
Why? To raise money and awareness for the wonderful Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.
Having experienced cancer diagnosis and treatment for myself, I know first hand what a rollercoaster ride it can be. At the age of 17, I felt like my life was put on pause. While my friends and peers were passing their driving tests, finding their independence and choosing which universities they'd like to apply to, I was in and out of hospital, relying on my family to help in every way. I couldn't have a shower without help, stand up from a chair unassisted and I had my driving license revoked. Treatment was a gruelling regime of hospital visits that left me feeling worse than before. I counted down the number of days left of treatment for 7 months when I thought I could get back to living.
But it doesn't stop when you get the "all clear". Finding your way back to normality is a struggle, especially for young people who are still figuring out what they want their own normal to be. The safety and security of regular hospital visits vanishes overnight. I was incredibly self concious of my very curly cropped hair style. Long term side effects are just that, and take a while to disappear.
The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust provide so much guidance, support and relief for young people during this transition and beyond. Having shunned all things cancer related, my 3 trips with the Trust were invaluable to my mental recovery.
Seeking a new challenge, I jumped at the opportunity to take part in this adventure while raising funds and awareness for this awesome charity to which I owe so much.
That's why on 17-24 June 2022 I, as part of a team of up to 20 riders, will take on this challenge to cycle 600 miles (965 kilometres) between the Trust's bases in Largs on Scotland's West Coast to East Cowes on the Isle of Wight. My personal fundraising target is £3000 - this will cover the cost of a trip for six young people, where they can be supported in life, with, and beyond cancer.
Wish me luck!!
