Story
Ayesha turned 3 on 15th June 2017. A couple of weeks later she was taken into hospital with a mild fever. Within a few hours she was diagnosed with Sepsis and a few hours later her beautiful soul was unexpectedly taken from us. She was the apple of our eyes and the life and soul of our family. It has been (and still is) a tragic time for us and we comfort ourselves knowing she is roaming freely in the gardens of Paradise.
Ayesha was born profoundly deaf and in Aug 2016 she underwent an operation to have Cochlear implants. In Jan 2017, we decided to start taking Ayesha to the Elizabeth Foundation (despite the 3 hours journey back and forth) to develop her hearing. During her time there, her development accelerated and she started responding to sound. It was truly a magical time for us all.
She enjoyed her time at the Elizabeth Foundation and this can only be put down to the hard work they put in, not just with Ayesha but with all the children, on a daily basis.
The Elizabeth Foundation was founded in 1981 by Shirley and David Metherell, whose daughter, Elizabeth, was diagnosed as profoundly deaf when she was 22 months old. In response to a lack of local support for Elizabeth. Shirley and David set up and developed The Elizabeth Foundation to support other parents of newly diagnosed children with hearing loss.
The Elizabeth Foundation started in the Metherell's home where it quickly grew and developed into what is today, a purpose built family centre on the grounds of Portsmouth's main hospital. Today they remain the UK's single largest provider of early intervention, educational and support services for pre-school children and babies with varying degrees of hearing loss. This year over 80 babies, toddlers and pre-school children will attend specialist education programmes and get individual speech and language therapy.
