Story
1 in 3 people will have an acquired brain injury (ABI) at some point in their life time.
Two months after the death of her husband, Christine Sutton was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2013. After previously being treated for the tumour in 2000 and 2002, she had been living a normal life. At the age of 44, Christine underwent brain surgery and was left with an ABI from which she never fully recovered. Christine passed away from brain cancer in October 2019 at the age of 50.
As a family, our Mothers illness at such a young age was devastating. Resources for treatment and recovery in Ireland was limited and inadequate- Christine had to live in a nursing home for five years before her death. Her independence was completely lost, with major cognitive and behavioural changes. Brain injury is traumatic for sufferers and their families, something we personally experienced everyday.
We are encouraging donations by sharing your favourite reading material and any stories you have about brain injury by using the hashtags #shareforsameyou and #sameyoucharity. Christine still loved to read when her mobility was effected, and we understand there are so many people who cannot participate in physical activity for charity.
Same You- 'There is an urgent need to increase the provision of immediate neurorehabilitation after leaving hospital for young people who have experienced brain injury and stroke. SameYou plans to be a catalyst for change. Starting by bringing global neurological leaders together to plan innovations in advanced nurse practitioner training qualifications, investigating how to support new clinical research and working on the most effective ways to develop evidence for policy change.'
