Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In June 2016 I lost my beautiful mum Gill to breast cancer. She had fought the disease with amazing determination for nearly ten years. As well as losing my mum, my three children have lost their beloved granny, my dad his wife of fifty years and the list goes on and on. The past six months have been incredibly difficult for us all. Mum has left a huge hole that nothing and no-one can even begin to fill.
I applied to run the marathon early last year when Mum's illness had reached its final stages. I felt helpless at the time and this felt like I was actually doing something that might help. I knew that it wouldn't help Mum but might help others faced with the same disease. The phone call came offering a place while I was in Devon with the rest of the family, preparing to bury Mum's ashes, back home in Paignton with her parents.
The major issue with all of this is that I am or at least was a complete non-runner. Didn't run, Didn't like running. Definitely didn't like the idea of running. But, my wonderful friend Helen and I started the Couch to 5K programme in September and ran our first 5k mid November. We have been out training three times a week whenever we are able to and have run in the pouring rain, in the freezing cold, early in the morning and later at night. Slowly and surely the miles on the clock are creeping up so I am fairly certain I will be able to run at least part of the marathon.
I am running with my lovely friend, Rachel Stewart. Both of us are a bit daunted by the challenge, to say the least, but Mum was an inspirational, determined woman, who never let a perceived limitation stand in her path. So we're hoping some of her steely determination will have rubbed off on us.
Rachel is running for Whizz-Kidz, a charity that supports disabled children by providing wheelchairs and other mobility equipment, so that they can enjoy fun and active childhoods. They work around the country, including in Cheltenham, and make a real difference to the lives of young people in Gloucestershire and further afield.
Whether you wish to donate to Whizz-Kidz via Rachel's page, or to Breast Cancer Now here, if you can, please support us so that we can meet our fundraising targets and do Mum proud.
Your help is really appreciated. Thank you.
