Story
My dad had a quadruple heart by pass approx. 19 years ago. 5 years ago he ripped his inner aorta whilst swimming. Although I have always kept fit and eaten healthily I too have inherited problems with my heart. 7 years ago I had blockages in two of my arteries and had stents fitted at Papworth Hospital. The treatment I received from Dr Duncan McNab and his team both at Ipswich and Papworth was first class. My swimming times in many races were the best I had swum for 8 years !
In 2015 I swam 1 mile in the Great East Swim setting the best time in my 55-59 years age group and came 30th / 654 swimmers. In 2016 I moved up to 2 miles and came 4th in my age and 18th / 285 swimmers. This year I am swimming 5km / 3 miles. This is again unknown territory for me as the last time I swam over two miles in open water was in the 1977 Walton to Clacton Pier sea swim ! ( I didn't finish that either ! ).
British Heart Foundation is a brilliant cause to support. A large proportion of the population also suffer with heart problems.
My dad is now 83 years old and still regularly swims. It just goes to show the importance of exercise and the assistance charities like British Heart Foundation provide.
