Story
On Saturday 18th April I will playing a 12 hour non stop organathon in St James Garlickhithe in the City of London …. why??
Every week many thousands of organists play many thousands of organs in their homes, in churches, in synagogues, in cinemas and theatres, in masonic lodges, in schools, chapels, conservatoires and cathedrals.
Some organs rightly enjoy international fame – the Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Festival Hall, the Grand Temple in Great Queen Street and Blackpool Tower Ballroom, for example. But most organs are less well known, left instead to the care of experts, enthusiasts and aficionados.
The organ was once at the centre of musical life in every City, town and village, with the instrument (perhaps rivalled only by the clock) being the most sophisticated piece of technology anyone would have known. Similarly, the organist would have been found at the heart of most if not all musical activity in that community.
Times change of course. While the organ remains as thrilling to hear and play as ever, today there are many fewer opportunities to hear an organ played well – and perhaps even fewer opportunities to learn to play one.
So I am going to play non stop for 12 hours to raise money for The Royal College or Organists and the Lord Mayor's Charity Appeal and I want you to sponsor me! I would be thrilled if it was just a tenner … but I would love more …. every penny counts!
I will be updating my page regularly with details about the day but in the meantime.
Thank you!
Andrew
