For those who know me you will know that I like a challenge! Especially a physical endurance challenge. And that's exactly what I have set myself.
In order to raise money for Combat Stress on March 1st I am going to run the Bath Half Marathon (all 13 miles) in Combat Assault Order! For those that don't know this consists of Boots, Combats, Body Armour, Helmet, Webbing and Day Sack - a combined weight of 25Kg. I will forego the rifle on this occasion.
And please wish me luck – 25Kg is a third of my entire body weight and running in body armour and helmet is not particularly comfortable – but it is nothing compared to living with PTSD.
Ten years ago this month I left the Regular Army having served in Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Iraq. Sadly over the last year I have found that an increasing number of soldiers that I served with are starting to show the mental scars of those years of service, several now suffering with PTSD.
Combat Stress, founded in 1919 following the First World War, provides specialist clinical treatment and welfare support to all UK Veterans suffering from psychological injuries. The charity currently spends nearly £14 million per annum to deliver its unique range of services to Veterans suffering from mental ill-health.
In order to raise money for this important charity I have decided to take up the 'soldier's burden' and I am going to run the Bath Half Marathon carrying a 25Kg burden of my own.
Combat Stress has found that, on average, Veterans wait 13 years after leaving Service before seeking their help and there has been a substantial increase in Afghanistan Veterans seeking mental health support. The statistics highlight a 57% increase in Afghanistan Veterans seeking Combat Stress’ support from 2012 to 2013. Combat Stress received 358 new Afghanistan Veteran referrals in 2013, compared to 228 in 2012. Combat Stress currently has a caseload of over 660 Afghanistan Veterans.
Combat Stress makes a real difference to the lives of thousands of ex-Service men and women across the UK suffering from psychological wounds. The demand for their services is getting bigger all the time and they really need our support to do more. Mental ill-health affects ex-Service men and women of all ages.
Right now, Combat Stress is supporting over 5,600 Veterans aged from 19 to 97 and are a vital lifeline for these men and women, and their families.
