We support the poor and the needy to make them self-reliant and independent

Story

Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder in which the body makes an abnormal form of hemoglobin

• Annually 6,000 children are born with Thalassemia major in Pakistan

• 60% to 70% succumb to Hepatitis B or C and die before reaching the age of 10

• 90% of child sufferers all come from a low family income background

The SMT Thalassemia Care and Prevention Centre currently has 180 registered major patients from which 107 are currently surviving by having  blood transfusions every 10-15 days and 83 are receiving Iron Chelation medication which is beyond their means .

After in depth consultation with various hospitals in Pakistan and looking at the success rates of Bone Marrow Transplant procedures, SMT have taken the decision to offer Serum Ferritin Tests on our patients. These tests will be conducted free of charge to all deserving families and at a reduced rate for other affording families.

Serum Ferritin Tests are necessary for all Thalassemia patients after every 3 months to check their iron levels and allows doctors to recommend the correct dosage of iron chelation medicine required.

This test is not currently available in Haripur which means families with Thalassemia patients are having to travel to either Rawalpindi or Abbotabad to undergo these tests. This is resulting in expenses of around Rs.2000 which is an amount that these families cannot afford.

Once funds have been raised, the specialists at the hospital will decide who will be the best candidate to undergo the procedure with the highest success rate.

The cost of the Chemistry Analyzer together with the regents is around RS 1,840,000 (£8,000). This is a very costly process which is beyond the means of the patients family therefore we are appealing on their behalf. With regular testing along with medication, we can monitor the patient's iron level and prevent any further complications. Your support will ensure that underprivileged children are provided with a good quality of life.

I pray that you will be able to spare a thought for these poor children and assist us in our cause by contributing towards this invaluable appeal and remember the words of our Beloved Prophet (peace be upon him), “Charity does not decrease wealth”. Jaza Khalla Khair.
