Scarlett's Story.
When Scarlett was born, I noticed her chest was dipped a little when I pointed this out to the health visitor she said that she would grow into it. Months went by and the dip in her chest became more and more noticeable, so we took her to the doctors, after an appointment at the QE hospital we got transferred to the RVI where there was a specialist team who would know what was wrong with her chest.
The consultant at the RVI looked at Scarlett and immediately said it was poland syndrome. I had literally never heard of this before and when I asked Questions the consultant said that he didnt know much about it and couldnt give me a leaflet on it because there was none, to go away and do my own research. so I did, I joined support groups and followed PIP-UK on facebook and so I have decided to fundraise for PIP-UK while raising awareness for Poland Syndrome! #
Poland Syndrome is where there is missing or underdeveloped muscles on one side of the body, resulting in abnormalities which can affect the chest, shoulder arm and can cause a webbed/shortened hand. It has been estimated to occur in 1 in 20,000 newborns and the cause of it is unknown. although tresearchs have suggested that it may be a result from a disruption of blood flow during the development before birth.
