Histon & Impington Green Spaces charity (reg. 10039763, Gift Aid eligible) was set up in 2021 to acquire the so-called Abbey Fields - Long Meadow and the wildlife-rich mosaic of Croft Close Set Aside - and manage them for biodiversity conservation, people's enjoyment, educational use and preservation of archaeological heritage. They were about to be sold off and closed to public access but a group of residents mobilised to secure the fields for the community. Now the charity has to work hard to raise £500,000 to pay for that purchase and initial management. Meanwhile numerous volunteers have been started on the management of the land and investigation of the biodiversity: deer, lizards, frogs, newts, 67 bird species and over 200 plant species. Several UK red-listed (threatened) species have been recorded. So far, around 200 residents have donated to the cause and the charity has about one third in the bank, one third pledged by a single, amazing individual, and one third to go.
Saving green spaces is for everybody's well-being and, especially, for young people, who have seen their natural heritage disappearing before their eyes. Let's secure Long Meadow and Croft Close Set Aside - then make them the start of a whole network of green spaces!
