Story
Support After Rape and Sexual Violence Leeds is a trans-inclusive charity that supports women and girls throughout Leeds who have survived sexual assault, abuse, harassment or violence either recently or during childhood.
SARSVL offers these services via a free telephone helpline that offers
emotional support to women and girls of any age by telephone, text and email. They also offer Advocacy services working with women aged 16 and over who have been affected by rape or sexual violence at any time in their lives, to help them to regain control of their lives and make informed choices about the issues affecting them. Finally, they offer a specialist Counselling service to support women aged 18 and over who have experienced sexual violence of any kind and at any point in their lives. The services offered by SARSVL are a lifeline to survivors of sexual violence and abuse.
What is "A Year in Purgatory"?
In March 2020, at beginning of the pandemic, BBC Radio 2 young folk
award winner, Maddie Morris self-released a song-writing project where they wrote a song a day in self-isolation. Though this album had no intention to be so, it was later described as a "manifesto for survivors of sexual abuse during the lockdown." Maddie describes the response to this project "I wrote the songs as a way to express how it felt being in lockdown, at the time being stuck without routine was really tough as someone who has survived sexual abuse. Once I released Purgatory, I was flooded with messages from other survivors who told me that the songs resonated with them. It made me realize how difficult COVID has been for so many survivors of sexual violence and how important it is that there are services for those of us affected by sexual violence to talk and process these feelings."
On the 29th of April 2021, "A Year in Purgatory" will be streamed live from Wharf Chambers where Maddie will be performing with Jake Madhatter on percussion and Samantha Brown on Fiddle to raise money for Support After Rape and Sexual Violence Leeds. There will be performances from Lilian Grace, Devika Kapoor, Maisie, and Rosie Miles. Lilian Grace, a performer at the event stated "The incredible work that SARSVL does for survivors cannot be overlooked. They are essential in the fight to end sexual violence. I'm so excited to get involved in a project that will help fund this service."
