We pioneer life-saving cancer research to help us beat cancer

Story

On 18th April 2010 David passed away in the family home after a long battle against Cancer. David was a loving Husband, Father, Brother and Son to a family who thought the world of him. David also lost his brother Tommy to the disease 7 years ago. At 47 years of age David was taken from us far too soon. David would regularly encourage his son Steven with his football taking him to games week in week out from the age of 8. He was a proud father witnessing Steven achieve what all young footballers dream of in playing for Centre of excellence Sheffield United. Dave regularly liked to keep in shape with his Karate and was always a tough competitor when we as boys tried to take him on. Dave always had time for any of Stevens mates and there would often be a gang of us in and out of his home as if it was our own.

We never had chance to say thanks for all the time and effort he showed us when we were kids, we will sincerely miss him.

Now 2 months later plans have been made to remember David and raise money for Cancer Research UK.

On the 20th of August Steven and 10 of his extremely close friends, many of whom knew Dave for many years, will be attempting to climb the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales one after the other and all within 24-hours!

1.Ben Nevis, in Scotland (1344m)

2.Scafell Pike, in England (978m)

3.Snowdon, in Wales (1085m)

This challenge described as ‘the toughest hike in Britain’ will be something of an incredible feet to accomplish. The total distance including travel between the Mountains is 583 Miles. Even the most fittest of athletes would have it tough competing against the road traffic, the altitude, the heat, the cold and so I have been told the darn midges, lying ahead of us. Not to mention that a number of us are lacking physical fitness and relying on sheer determination, team spirit and the passion we share for our cause to get us through.

While you are on this site please take time to spend a little while to remember that wonderful and generous man called David. Close your eyes and think of David and you will remember a generous man who was so very caring and supportive of his family. Friends, family and colleagues can remember the wonderful times they had with David - there were no other times.

Thank you for visiting this fundraising page. Please make a pledge to remember someone who was a wonderful father, husband, brother and son.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to donate: Cancer Research UK will receive your money electronically and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in Gift Aid will be added to your donation at no cost to you.

Our cause is two-fold, not only are we remembering the wonderful life of David Shannon but also that of Heather Lisgo the mother of our mate Stephen who is also doing the challenge. Heather passed away following an epilepsy attack in 2003 when Stephen was only 16. Heather was a wonderful caring wife, sister, daughter and mother to Mark and Stephen. I have taken the time to put together another page raising money for Epilepsy Action where you can find out more about Heather's wonderful life and the loving family that she was with when she passed away.
