24 Hours - 24 Challenges - 1 Worthy Cause
Help support the GVI Amazon Expedition team as we survey, climb, swim, cook and crawl our way through the jungle to raise money for education in rural Amazon schools where GVI volunteers and interns teach English and conservation. Help us protect the forest & culture of the Amazon through education -- donate today!
(Request from the field: please note whether you are supporting the GIRLS or BOYS team for a little friendly competition at camp -- thanks for your support!)
What is this all about? We may have gone a bit mad being out in the jungle so long, but we've organized 24 full hours of competition here in the Yachana Reserve. Two team of volunteers & staff -- guys against girls -- will compete in hourly challenges involving everything from serious scientific survey work to midnight basket weaving, tree climbing and a cook-off! All in the name of charity as we raise money for local schools and education programs.
How can you help? Donate today! Support the guys team, the girls team, take bets on who will win, or just sponsor our crazy challenge as a whole. Spread the word & encourage others to donate as well. A big "gracias" in advance for your help in getting the word out & helping us meet our goal!
Why this goal?
Most Amazon inhabitants have extremely limited education, generally only to an elementary or middle school level, and schools are often lacking in supplies, sometimes in teachers as well. Living conditions for teachers are rustic, and make attracting and keeping dedicated teachers very difficult. Materials and supplies beyond basic texts are generally non-existent. For bilingual indigenous schools, texts and materials are rarely available in their native language.
For students, this means that learning is often a static and non-stimulating experience, mainly involving repetition. Hands-on activities are rare, and students have almost no exposure to subjects beyond the basics -- for example, environmental education, which is so key to life in the Amazon.
GVI Amazon is committed to increasing access to, and quality of, education in rural Amazon regions where we work. We will support schools by donating needed supplies (classroom & structural); providing materials for environmental education; awarding high school scholarships; and supporting educational projects & workshops.
By increasing education access and quality locally, we hope to provide Amazon students with the skills to achieve a sustainable future for their communities. Environmental education will help them to understand the value of the forest & the threats to it, and access to high school opens the door to further education, with the ability to support & strengthen their own communities in the future.
