Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

As most of you will know, my beautiful daughter Sophie died when she was just 5 years old. This year Sophie would be turning 21 and we want to do something positive to celebrate and remember her on this special birthday. The idea for 21thingsforSophie was born. Over the course of this year, we’re going to be doing 21 things, some big and some small to remember our girl. We thought this would be a great opportunity to raise some money for a good cause so here is your opportunity to get involved with our 2 biggest events - a skydive and a half marathon 😊.

Over the years I have had the most amazing support from friends and family. When I mentioned I was thinking of dong a skydive, my fab brother-in-law, Willie, quickly offered to join me. Talking about this at work, my amazing colleagues, June and Prue also decided to join in with the fun - and madness. Last but not least, my lovely sister-in- law Wendy decided to join us too - the famous five!

When our family friend, Peter Hammond, heard about what we were doing he wanted to get involved too. Pete is a keen runner but has recently been unwell. As an incentive to get back to fitness, Pete is going to run the Glasgow half marathon on 30th September in Sophie’s memory. Together, we are all hoping to raise some money for Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity.

Why this charity? Sophie was born with a complex heart disorder known as a univentricular heart. During her short life she had several surgeries and procedures in Yorkhill Children’s hospital in Glasgow. In 2015, after over one hundred years on the site in Yorkhill, the hospital closed and the new Glasgow Children’s hospital opened in it’s place.

When we were deciding on a charity,  we heard of family friends whose little girl was going through treatment at the new hospital. Hearing her story took me right back to the days spent in hospital with Soph and our decision was made. Even though we don’t have a personal connection to the new hospital, we realised there are  lots of little girls and boys (and their families) still in need of the excellent love and  care that Sophie received.

The hospital needs every penny it can raise - for ground breaking research, state of the art medical equipment or all important play equipment for some of Scotland’s sickest children. Anything you can spare to support this fantastic charity will be gratefully received and very well spent.

Many thanks and much love

Carolyn, Prue, June, Wendy, Willie and Pete
