Story
About 10 years ago, a small group of golfers from West Sussex Golf Club played 100 holes in a day to raise money for charity. Over the following 5 years, they increased the challenge so that in the last year, they played over 200 holes in a 24 hour period. This was to be their last hurrah. However, Russell Barton who came up with the initial idea and played in every challenge sadly passed away this year and another regular player, Patrick Curry succumbed to Covid. So, some of the original team decided to do it again and open it out to the broader membership of the club and play for the Barton trophy.
This year, fifty-six golfers will attempt to play 100 holes of golf at the West Sussex Golf Club on Sunday 26th June in aid of the Worthing Breast Cancer Trust. The golfers will start at first light (4.15 am) and play until they have completed 100 holes with the trophy being awarded to the winning team.
To take on this challenge, our four-man team of Jamie Ellis, Henry Webster, Charlie Curran and Will Newland has chosen to raise money for The Worthing Breast Cancer Trust.
Whilst a golf challenge might be considered a 1st world challenge, in reality, the day will consist of us walking over 30 miles, that is approx 63,000 steps, whilst carrying our golf clubs, and at times our partners, on our backs. For this hardy four, we expect to be taking around 225-250 shots each and Jamie Ellis keeps talking about chafing, although we are confident he will be fine.
We would absolutely love your support for this very worthy cause! More details about the charity can be found here:
The Worthing Breast Cancer Trust is part of The Sussex Cancer Fund which was created in 1981 by consultant oncologists Dr Deutsch, Dr Hodson and Dr Murrell. Originally called the Sussex Cancer Treatment Fund, the charity progressed to include the funding and development of research programmes and later became known as the Sussex Cancer Fund for Treatment and Research. Now named the Sussex Cancer Fund, the goals of the fund are to work hand in hand with the NHS to give every cancer patient in Sussex the best available treatment and facilities.
