Story

Hello and thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I am sure many reading this can empathise with a feeling of helplessness when walking past a person experiencing homelessness with no cash to give, and no clear path to provide genuine help. Living in Manchester City Centre, it is clear to see that the number of people experiencing homelessness today is truly shocking. At the time of writing this, the temperature here is -6°, and my heart goes out to those who have no home to go back to, no bed to sleep in, no warm clothes to wear, no food to eat. I want to do something to help, and I am blessed to have discovered the gift of Yoga and to be in a position to share this with others as a teacher. This Christmas, I will be teaching two fundraising classes on Wednesday 21st of December, in conjunction with Big Issue North and facilitated by The Angel Centre, open to the general public as well as Big Issue North vendors themselves. As well as an opportunity to raise money, this event will provide the unique opportunity for me to share the gift of yoga with people experiencing homelessness, who would otherwise have no means of accessing it. I will use this opportunity to show people what is possible to do with the body, the breath, and a very small amount of space, and hope to offer something to provide solace in times of need. My hope is that on this special Wednesday evening, we can all come together (in person, or in spirit for those who cannot attend physically) and do what we can to make a change.

For those of you who cannot attend on the evening but resonate with the cause, all donations are welcomed and will do their part in supporting people experiencing homelessness this Christmas, no matter how small the donation may seem. We will have all of our donators and supporters in mind on the evening <3

I hope to see you there, and any support you can give means the world.

Big Issue North is in the business of changing lives.

We believe that everyone has the right to earn an independent income. That’s why we do not ask for a permanent address, ID, a bank account, qualifications, or previous experience – anyone who wants to sell Big Issue North can do so.

We produce a wide range of socially conscious media content, including a weekly magazine sold by homeless and vulnerably housed people in the north of England with few other means of earning an income. Big Issue North vendors are self-employed and buy magazines from one of our regional offices for £1.50 each, then sell them on established pitches in towns and cities for £3 across the north, keeping the £1.50 they make from every sale. Selling Big Issue North also gives vendors motivation and helps to boost their self-esteem.

As well as selling the magazine, our vendors are given advice by staff on how to get help with anything from developing their skills or accessing English language courses, to getting housing, financial or health advice, which can help them achieve their goals and improve their lives for good.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
