Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Hi my name is Dan Willmore and I work at a Cardiff based school called Ashgrove, which is a school for children with Autism.

Over a year ago a friend and I were surfing at our local beach and were talking about how this would be a really great and positive experience for our children. From this we created a project called Coastal Connections. This project is all about using our local beaches to encourage and inspire our young people through positive outdoor experiences.

My role as part of this project was to introduce our kids to the surf experience.

It has been a year since we started taking our children surfing and the results are amazing. The pupils who have been involved have grown in confidence in and out of the water.

We are about to start our second surf season with a new group of pupils.

The SUP Challenge Wales came about as I wanted to promote what we do and the benefits the pupils get from spending time at the beach and in the water. I also wanted to give more pupils the opportunity to have this experience. We are raising money in conjunction the Parents and Friends of Ashgrove to allow us to provide more opportunities for our young people.

The challenge we have undertaken is a stand up paddle from Swansea to Cardiff. The distance is 45 miles. The event will be held during the month of July and will be based on getting the best weather conditions possible. The plan is to make the 45 mile trip in around 8 hours. We will also be including a stop at Rest Bay, Porthcawl to meet with the local RLNI and Surf Lifesavers to promote beach safety. There will be two other people from Ashgrove joining me on this journey, Ian Liddiatt and Kerry Baker as well as Jim Brookes-Dowsett who is our sponsor and water safety from Puravida Boardriders.

We hope you support this journey and look forward to seeing you in the water.
