Story

Intro

Last year, I somehow managed to complete the 'Virtual Marathon', which was a very lonely and wet affair (you can read about it here: www.paulwfranklin.com/blog/i-did-the-marathon). Now I'm doing the 41st London Marathon, the first one to be held in October, along the proper London course and in front of real people.

What?

On the 3rd of October I shall be doing the London Marathon. I was going to say 'running', but I can't guarantee I won't walk some of it.

Why?

About 11 years ago, my Mum died of Alzheimer's disease. It was pretty horrible, to say the least. Watching her degenerate over several years, gradually reaching a point where she barely recognised anybody and wasn't able to eat or do anything on her own.

It's a ghastly disease, but still not that much is known about what causes it, and how it can be treated. It affects roughly as many people in the UK as does Cancer.

I am raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society, which is not only seeking a cure, but also supporting those with dementia throughout the UK.

How?

Good question.

I hate running.

Well, I'm quite good at doing short, fast bursts of about 10-20 metres. But continuously running over long distances? No thanks.

Which is why covering about 26 miles / 42 km will be a massive challenge for me. It's *literally* a marathon, not a sprint. I wanted to do it in a wheelchair but apparently that's not allowed. Maybe I'll get those trainers with the wheels in the base...

As part of the training, I'll have to get up early and seriously cut down on the booze. If you know me at all, then you'll know that both of those notions fill me with dread. This marathon will not only be about running the distance on the day, but will also mean a total lifestyle change in the 3+ months preceding it.

What Now?

Please click the lovely button that says DONATE, and help me reach £2,000 (minimum!).

May I suggest £25? That's £1 per mile, and you get the last one for free!

If not, then a tenner will be just great.

Thank you all!
