Barnsley Hospital Charity launches the Tiny Hearts Appeal
Barnsley Hospital Charity is launching a Tiny Hearts Appeal which aims to raise £1 million over the next two years to help fund a brand new, Special Care Baby Unit at the hospital. The new unit aims to provide an even better standard of care for all the Special Care babies and the most comfortable environment for all families and staff on the unit esuring the best possible start for these extremely vulnerable patients.
The brand new unit will be built with the needs of the babies and their families in mind. State of the art equipment will be provided to enable the Special Care Baby Unit team to continue their fantastic care and enhance their capabilities.
Premature babies are underdeveloped in every way and have to be given extra help for their tiny bodies to cope with the outside world and can spend up to 13-14 weeks on the unit. The care on the unit is focused around allowing the babies to fully develop in the most matural way possible and the current unit needs to be updated and expanded in order to allow this to happen as well as to allow precious bonding experiences between the baby and parents.
An average pregnancy should last 40 weeks and when babies are born early it leads to a huge change in family plans. Not only do families have to deal with the stress of possibly losing their new baby, but they have to deal with the financial implications of their baby living on the Special Care Baby unit. Families at this time have to deal with so many different emotions and need exceptional support
All money raised for the Tiny Hearts Appeal will be used to buy essential equipment such as intensive care units for babies that need that extra help with breathing, keeping warm or feeding, double beds and homely furniture for families who need to stay at the hospital and the best infant resuscitator equipment.
