Peter was a genuinely brilliant guy who was hilariously funny, determined and had a tremendous work ethic. Pete was a much loved family member and a loyal friend. He truly loved life and was always up for taking on a new challenge. As big brother to myself and Robert, Pete was caring, encouraging and a great provider of advice and support.

On the 29th November 2014, aged 39 years, Pete was walking home when he was struck by a speeding driver. Witnesses, medics and police rushed to Peter’s aid but sadly he had suffered horrific injuries, and died at the roadside. To say this was devastating would be an understatement - the shock and distress that was caused to all who loved Peter could never be accurately described.

The police investigation found that the driver had been going at speeds of up to 93mph along a road which has a limit of 40mph and hit my brother at approximately 67mph, before driving away. Over the past 18 months we have attended various hearings at Crown Court and come face to face with the man responsible for Peter's death – something which you never expect to have to do. Ultimately, following an initial lenient sentence, the driver was given 4 years and 6 months in prison. Of course, no prison sentence will ever compare to all that Peter lost.

The police investigation found with absolute certainty – had the driver been travelling at the speed limit, Peter would not have been hit, let alone injured, let alone killed. The real tragedy about these kind of deaths is that they are totally preventable and unnecessary.

RoadPeace are a national charity who campaign for tougher sentencing, greater awareness of the danger of speeding and provide emotional support to bereaved families.

Peter had a huge amount of drive and determination and so we have decided to take on the Three Peaks Challenge (climbing the highest mountain in Scotland, the highest mountain in England and the highest mountain in Wales - in 24 hours) to do some good in his memory, and we hope it is something he would be proud of. We have been lucky enough to be surrounded by wonderfully supportive friends, police, and counsellors during this very difficult time and would now like to try and help other families who experience events such as these.
