On the 13 October 2019 we will depart the UK for Kanungu, Uganda. Our group, represents senior level women from across the UK food industry including retailers, suppliers and producers. We are uniting to support farmers in eastern Africa grow more, sell more, and sell for more, while preserving the environment for years to come.
Coffee is Uganda’s most valuable crop, with the majority of the country’s coffee being exported to Europe. Despite coffee’s profit-making potential, many coffee farmers living in Kanungu, western Uganda, struggle to make ends meet. Farm Africa’s coffee project in Kanungu is addressing the issues impeding women and young Ugandans from setting up profitable coffee businesses. Farm Africa is delivering training in coffee production, strengthening the capacity of agribusinesses and cooperatives to support coffee farmers, and cultivating young and female farming leaders.
THE CHALLENGE
The group will plant 1,000 trees, across 36 households, and over 80 acres of farmland in just under three days! These fruit trees will grow to shelter the coffee trees, boost soil quality and provide families with additional food and income.
As well as physically planting trees, the Thousand Trees challenge team are fundraising, aiming to reach a team target of £75,000 in support of Farm Africa’s innovative projects in eastern Africa, supporting farmers to lift themselves and their communities out of poverty.
Thank you for your support
