Cycle For Orkney is the third annual charity cycle ride which follows on from those organised previously by Steven Waterman. There will be three routes this year, a 100 km route for the experienced cyclist as well as a 40 mile intermediate route and a 10 mile novice route. The event is open to all classes of cyclist and hopefully will offer something for everyone. The ride is being organised by Orkney's local Army Reserve Unit, 10 (ORKNEY) Field Troop Royal Engineers. The aim is to fundraise for various charities either local or military each year whilst undertaking a physically demanding yet enjoyable cycle ride. Registration for all events will start at 0800 hrs in the Royal British Legion Kirkwall, with the event starting at 0930 hrs. All 3 rides will start at the Royal British Legion in Orkney's capital city of Kirkwall. All three groups will take the coastal route past Scapa Beach before heading onwards through Orphir where the 10 milers will turn off and the remainder will press on towards a pit stop at the Royal British Legion Stromness. Once all cyclists have refuelled their bodies the event will start its second leg from Stromness back to Kirkwall this time passing through the west mainland and Finstown. On completion of the event all riders and supporters will be invited into the Royal British Legion Kirkwall to toast their success and give their weary limbs a rest.
The event is raising funds for SSAFA, particulary the local branch who are in need of some funding
