Hearing Dogs for the Deaf is the University of Southampton’s Auditory Implant Service charity of the year. So far we have raised 75% of our target which, when reached, will enable us to name a Hearing Dog puppy and provide an important contribution towards its training. Our team comprises 5 brave souls who will be abseiling down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth on May 25 in a bid to raise (and go beyond!) the remainder of our target. Staff members Mary Hamilton (Teacher of the Deaf) and Katrina Faulds (Audiologist) will be joined by Jan Hinks (LSA/BSL Communicator), Michael Jack Vowles (husband of AIS administrator, Katherine) and Lorna Leverett (FEE Finance Team) in the descent.
The Auditory Implant Service was inspired to support Hearing Dogs for the Deaf after receiving a visit from members of the organisation (including dogs!) and a Hearing Dog participant during a training day.
The hearing dogs are trained to respond to up to 10 sounds, including gently nudging and finally pulling the bedclothes off their deaf recipient in the morning if they refuse to get out of bed! They also bring confidence and a means of contact with the wider community; many deaf people feel isolated, but people with dogs get noticed and spoken to when out and about.
