Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
As you may already know, I am a hard-working and fun-loving girl from the North East of England who, in Sep 2010, trekked the Andean mountain range in Peru, ending at Machu Picchu to raise money for Breast Cancer Care.
The fundraising trek involved trekking for five days. I was trekking over rough terrain, at 15,000 ft altitude, for between eight and twelve hours a day in the remote mountains and valleys of the Lares region - culminating with the final day's trek through the Ipsayccassa Pass at 4,500m high! This was 2,500 times my own height! The trek was higher and longer than the famous trail in the region - the Inca Trail.
I camped overnight in temperatures plummeting as low as minus 12 degrees and in very basic conditions. The trek did not follow general tourist trails and our group met no-one other than a few local villagers during the trek.
The challenge was demanding and I am pleased to say that I lived up to it and continue to raise money in support of Breast Cancer Care!
If you would like to hear me talking about the trek you can listen to an interview on Bishop FM here: http://www.bishopfm.com/2010/10/gemma-treks-to-raise-funds-for-breast-cancer-care/
If you have not yet donated, please help me all you can. If you are only able to give £1 or £2 that's more than I had and I'm grateful for all donations no matter how small.
I am passionate about the cause and I sponsored myself my summer holiday fund of £1200.00 to do this trek and in addition I bought a lot of the necessary equipment; it wouldn't have been fair for it to cost me nothing! Although I have reached my target please still give a little - every pound is as valuable as the last to the charity. Please show your support for me by making a donation.
Below is a bit more information about me.
Thank you so much for looking at my page and please do give what you can. This page will close on 12th December 2010.
Gemma Langlands - Age 26
This challenge initially inspired me because I believe the right support can make a world of difference to someone fighting cancer. I've lost 2 grandparents to cancer and had 2 close friends and 7 more of my family members diagnosed with cancer. In my spare time I enjoy rock/metal music, theatre, walking (mainly on the flat!), reading and spending time with my family.
Undertaking the trek was the most challenging event I have experienced in my life (yes, more so than skydiving and bunjee-jumping!) because I knew that it was not going to be easy and would involve mental as well as physical challenges, day after day. Endurance this time rather than just thrills!
However it was the most fulfilling experience of my life too, partly because of that.
Rather than bore you with stories on here I will talk to each of you as and when I see you - please do get in touch if you have any queries.
