Story
Thanks for visiting Team Jeary's fundraising page. Steve, Juliet, Ollie and Peter are going to be trekking in the Sinai
Desert, Egypt for five days from 9th April 2010 to raise funds for
the Marie Curie Hospice, Penarth, in memory of Marjorie Jeary
(Steve's beloved mother, Juliet's mother-in-law and Ollie and Pete's
gran), who passed away at the hospice on 24th February 2009.
It
would be great if you could sponsor us as we take on this challenge of
a lifetime to raise funds for the hospice that cared so well for
Marjorie (and us) during her final days. We hope to raise over £10,000 for this wonderful cause.
We will be doing things such as:-
- Trekking in the hot and particularly rough and rugged Sinai Desert for five days, including taking on a few peaks like Mount Sinai (of Moses fame)!
- Walking for up to eight hours a day in the hot sun carrying our own kit (Well not quite - some camels will help out a bit but we still have to hump quite a lot.)!
- Avoiding getting stung by scorpions, spat at by camels and bitten by snakes!
- Avoiding getting sun burnt, heat exhaustion etc etc!
- Raising mega bucks for the hospice!
You get the gist!!!
The money raised from the trek will help the
Penarth hospice continue to provide care and support to people with
cancer and other terminal illnesses completely free of charge. We, as a
family, were so well cared for by the dedicated and caring staff at the
hospice during the difficult days prior to Marjorie's death that, in
return, we decided to participate in the hospice's Mount Sinai Trek to
raise much needed funds to enable the hospice to carry on its fantastic
work. The decision to take part in the trek was made just before Marjorie passed away - so there's no getting out of it now!
The doctors and nurses at the Marie Curie
Hospice, Penarth, care for more than 600 patients each year at a cost
of £4 million which would not be possible without the support of people
like yourselves. 70% of the funds required have to be raised by voluntary contributions.
Many, many thanks for your support
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Marie Curie Cancer Care gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

Up-date (21st May 2009) - we had our briefing for the trek today - we now know that once we've climbed Mount Sinai on the first day of the trek we watch the sunrise, come back down, have some breakfast and then ... yes off we trek again over another mountain to get to our first night's camp - only 9-10 hours walking on the first day! It must be the plan to make us so tired that we won't have the energy to complain about the (lack of) facilities at camp each night. Happy Days!

Up-date (12th December 2009) - Steve & Juliet had a lovely walk up Pen-y-Fan today in beautiful sunshine - it was very cold and there was a lot of ice on the top though!

Up-date (1st March 2010) - Steve & Juliet did a 20 mile walk along the South West coastal path (up hill & down dale!) last Friday - on our knees by the time we reached Lyme Regis but just in time for a pint in the pub before catching the bus back to Sidmouth! On the Saturday Peter joined us on a shorter 10 mile walk via the pub in Otterton for lunch & a pint or two. Tonight Steve & Juliet went to see Mike Biss (Falcon Fitness) who has designed a personal training plan for Team Jeary to ensure that we make it to the summit of Mount Sinai with enough energy and strength to continue hiking for three days through the desert - thanks for the personal torture Mike!
Up-date (22nd March 2010) - Steve, Juliet & our friends Mandy and Taz (Cocker Spaniel) had a weekend away in a cottage in the Brecon Beacons to do a couple of days walking. A bit miserable on Saturday so did a short 5 miles around Ponsticill reservoir but made up for it big time on Sunday when we did 12.5 miles of walking which took in Cribyn, Pen-y-fan, Corn Du & included a quick up & down Pen-y-fan to Storey Arms in the middle of the walk - the weather came down by the time we got back to Corn Du and we had a miserable descent back to the Neaudd reservoir where the car was parked. We are all very weary today (including Taz who declined to go walkies preferring to stay on his bed!)
Up-date (23rd March 2010) - Juliet's bursitis in the hip has returned big time following the weekend so she had to visit the GP for a steroid injection today - the GP said it would hurt more before it felt better and it does! Hopefully I will be fully recovered for more training later in the week.
Up-date (8th April 2010) - we're off in a couple of hours - wish us luck!!! Cardiff & District Law Society is very kindly supporting us at its annual dinner on 16th April - the day after we get home.
Up-date (15th April 2010) - we're back save & sound with a few extras (mossi bites; blisters, bruises and, for most of us, a dose of Pharaoh's revenge!). We're also very tired - most of us were unable to sleep in the desert due to the cold & the noise of the camels complaining! It was an amazing experience and we'd like to thank all our supporters for helping us raise money for such a worthy cause - we hope to have raised £10,000 + by the cut-off date in May. Check the photos out either on Facebook (Juliet Jeary) or there are a few above. Once again THANKS!!!!
