What makes you sweat?
For us, it’s the fact that – in 2017 - refugees and asylum seekers fleeing conflict or persecution, for things as simple as being gay, face poverty and homelessness upon arrival. There’s a pitiful lack of legal help for them - many struggle to understand the new country’s laws and get caught in the criminal justice system, for completely avoidable reasons.
So, sweat is exactly what we intend to do.
Take 14 law PhD students, 10 gruelling kilometres, and a whole lot of determination. This unlikely bunch of athletes, rarely seen out of their natural habitat of the library, share a joint ambition to run the Great Manchester 10K, and campaign for the work of Refugee Action, whose volunteers provide front-line legal advice and resettlement services to asylum seekers and refugees in serious need. Many of us are from other countries and have made the UK our home while doing our PhDs. We are passionate about supporting this organization because it helps refugees do the same.
Please help us achieve these goals. Funding our group run challenge will directly benefit Refugee Action.
Justice and legal assistance for asylum seekers and refugees could not be more timely. - Sweating for Justice
