Hello :-)
I am running the London Marathon and am asking you to help me in raising money for Amnesty International and to
take action for nine women’s human rights defenders from Nicaragua.
Ana
María Pizarro, Juanita Jiménez, Luisa Molina Arguello, Marta María
Blandón, Martha Munguía, Mayra Sirias, Violeta Delgado, Yamileth Mejía
and Lorna Norori are facing legal proceedings for their involvement in
the case of a nine year-old girl, Rosita, who was raped and made
pregnant in 2003 and obtained a legal abortion in Nicaragua.
In October 2007 a complaint was lodged against the nine, accusing them
of concealment of rape and crimes against the administration of
justice. Amnesty fears the complaint has been brought because of the
women’s human rights work and their efforts to ensure that women and
girls can access safe and effective sexual and reproductive health
services.
Running the London Marathon is a great challenge for
me and something I’ve always wanted to do. Training has been quite an
effort (to say the least) but I am really motivated by the fact that I’m raising money for
Amnesty International, and that I’m also encouraging people to take
action for these human rights defenders.
These women are well
known human rights defenders and belong to a number of different
organisations which work with survivors of domestic violence and sexual
abuse; promote sexual health; and promote the rights of women, children
and young people in Nicaragua. They should be free to carry out their
vital work without restrictions or fears of reprisals.
Amnesty is urging the Nicaraguan authorities to clarify the legal position of the women and resolve their case.
Please sponsor me, any amount will be a great help, and visit the Amnesty website to find out
how you can take action to help these human rights defenders.
Many thanks,
Steve
