Help me raise money for Myeloma UK
Each year around 300 people in the UK are diagnosed with AL amyloidosis, a condition in which bone marrow produces abnormal proteins which the body cannot break down and which accumulate in various organs, gradually damaging their function. This year, my mother was one of those people, and in November she began chemotherapy treatment. There is no known cure for Al amyloidosis, but specialist treatment can slow or halt its progress.
Myeloma UK is the only organisation in the UK dealing exclusively with myeloma and related conditions such as amyloidosis. Myeloma UK provides support and information to patients and their families, funds research into treatments, and helps healthcare professionals to improve diagnosis, treatment and care for patients. It has a strategic partnership with the National Amyloidosis Centre (NAC) at the Royal Free Hospital in London, the only centre in the UK specialising in amyloidosis. Myeloma UK receives no government funding and relies almost entirely on voluntary donations and fundraising activities.
Last month I spent a day with my mother at the NAC. I have nothing but admiration for the staff there and the work they do to support patients like my mother who know they will be regular visitors to the centre for the foreseeable future. I’m running to raise money to support their work.
Ten years ago I ran the London Marathon, raising money for Shelter. Those of you with long memories will recall that I said at the time it would be my first and last fundraising marathon. Events over recent months have made a liar of me. I would like to use my recently re-kindled enthusiasm for running for good, and I hope you will support me in my efforts to raise much-needed money for Myeloma UK.
