Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
On Saturday May 28 and Sunday May 29 2011, 32 players from South Gloucestershire Hockey Club completed the longest continuous hockey match in history - 31 hours.
A file of evidence is now being compiled to send to Guinness in order to get our achievement officially recognised as a new world record.
We organised this event in order to raise money to help save the lives of premature and critically ill babies.
We started at 9am on Saturday May 28 at Bradley Stoke Community School in Bristol and finished at 4pm the following day, beating the existing world record by 45 minutes.
But our main goal was to raise as much money as possible for the Cots for Tots Appeal. This appeal aims to raise £1m for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St Michael's Hospital in Bristol, which cares for premature and critically ill babies. The money will allow the unit to buy new equipment and to increase is capacity so that it can look after even more babies, and their families.
The event was been organised by hockey player Darren Bane. His son Matthew was born on May 3 2008, more than three months early. He weighed 1lb 4oz, or 575g. He had severe chronic lung disease, metabolic bone disease and two hernias. He was not expected to live long. He underwent a number of blood transfusions, lumbar punctures and had to overcome a number of infections or viruses. He spent the first six months of his life at St Michael's Hospital, in Bristol, and spent a further six months permanently connected to an oxygen tank when he came home. He will have celebated his third birthday just before this marathon match.
In October 2010, club secretary Craig Lewis and partner Millie became the proud parents of Evan, who was born at 33 weeks, weighing 4lbs 15oz, and who also spent some time at St Michaels.
These are just two of the miraculous stories made possible by the equipment and expertise on offer at St Michael's Hospital. If you support our effort, you can play a part in helping to make many more miracles happen.
South Gloucestershire Hockey Club has adopted Cots for Tots as its charity for the 2010/11 season. We have raised money through a social event, by imposing fines for fouls committed on the pitch, and by donating £1 for every goal each of our four competitive teams scored over the winter season. You can find out more on our website, www.sghc.org.uk.
But this world record marathon match was our flagship event. We wanted to find a little place for our small, friendly, club in the history books. But more importantly, we want to help give more tiny vulnerable babies the best possible chance of survival. We completed the match, we are all now busy nursing our bruises and aching limbs, but it is not too late for you to support us, by making a donation. Please do - and help give those babies fighting chance. Thank you so much.
